Best Affordable Prepaid Phone Plans 2025
by Valeria
TextNow is the more flexible and budget-friendly choice if you don't want to be tied down to a monthly phone bill.
Finding a cheaper phone plan usually means picking from an MVNO or a prepaid phone plan, but with over 50 of them in the U.S., it’s hard to pick the right one. If you’re trying to pick between an affordable unlimited data plan or a flexible plan that grants you service even without payment, our review of Visible vs. TextNow can help.
Both carriers offer nationwide phone service with unlimited data options and widespread coverage. For the best value-driven choice, Visible would be the better pick as it can offer premium (prioritized) data on Verizon’s 5G network, plus extras like mobile hotspot, data roaming, and even smartwatch service. For the most flexible choice, TextNow would be a clear winner as it allows for more timely upgrades that fit your data needs in the moment, while retaining the ability to default back to a free phone service at any time to remain connected no matter what.
When it comes down to which service provider is the true budget-conscious choice, TextNow wins hands down. While its free ($0/month) service comes with a limited data service, the flexible options to pay for unlimited data at a daily, weekly, or the traditional monthly rate is a great way to save money in the longer run.
If you’re looking for more value out of a budget-friendly MVNO, however, Visible provides more high-speed data, mobile hotspot capabilities, and priority data on its higher-tier plans for a still relatively affordable price. It would be the choice for anyone using more than 20GB/month and who may frequently need to hotspot to another device.
Visible is a prepaid phone service provider (an MVNO) that operates on Verizon’s network.
It offers a range of prepaid phone plans that all come with unlimited talk & text and data. Note that only the Visible+ and Visible+ Pro plans offer priority data (data that isn’t slowed down during times of congestion).
TextNow is a prepaid phone service provider (an MVNO) that operates on a nationwide 5G network.
It offers a range of prepaid phone plans that offer unlimited talk & text, plus data options. Its main benefit is the free base plan that allows customers to keep their phone line active for $0/month with unlimited talk & text, plus up to 1GB of data for select essential apps like email, maps, finance, and rideshare. Its unlimited data plans are provided with flexibility in mind, giving customers the option to purchase data for a day, a week, or a more traditional month.
TextNow and Visible primarily differ in the types of plans they offer. TextNow has more flexibility in offering phone plans that are atypical of the traditional month-long service, with varying allowances of high-speed data to match different needs. The prices start at $0 and go up to $35.99 for a monthly unlimited data plan.
Visible only offers monthly unlimited data plans (no options for low or moderate data users) at incrementally increasing prices – $25, $35, $45 – to accommodate different extras/perks.
Neither carrier locks you into a contract, as they’re both prepaid phone providers. Visible does have the option to pre-pay for the full year (12 months) to enjoy deeper discounts, which would commit you for that period of time, regardless of whether you enjoy the service or not.
While Visible is a prepaid phone service, you won’t be able to enjoy any service unless you pay (as with any other carrier). TextNow, on the other hand, is one of a select few carriers that allows you to enjoy service even without payment. Its base Free Flex plan only requires a SIM card activation to get started, providing you with nationwide coverage for unlimited talk & text, plus up to 1GB of data for select apps like email, maps, finance, and rideshare.
TextNow’s promotions revolve around its SIM card – which is free with an Unlimited Data Plan purchase. Otherwise, if you’re signing up for the base Free Flex Plan, the SIM card is $4.99 to purchase.
Visible does often have promo codes for its plans (such as the current offer of saving up to $12/month for 26 months with code SWITCH26), as well as annual plan options that discount the monthly price even further.
Visible only allows you to enjoy its premium features (like priority data and higher data speeds for mobile hotspotting) on its higher-tier, more expensive plans. The base plan at $25/month offers less than some other similar carriers at similar pricing.
With TextNow, the tradeoff to its free service specifically is the ad-supported app. The ads (which only show up within the TextNow app) may be intrusive to some, although it’s important to note they do not appear in the weekly or monthly unlimited data plans.
Both TextNow’s and Visible’s advertised prices include all taxes and fees, so there are no surprises when it comes to checkout.
Choosing either TextNow or Visible can help you lower your cell phone bill overall, but their offerings are significantly different enough that you should determine whether it’s overall affordability you’re looking for (TextNow) or convenience with added features like mobile hotspot availability (Visible).
Both Mint Mobile and TextNow are MVNOs operating on two of the leading networks in the U.S. As an MVNO, TextNow does not receive network priority, meaning that during times of peak or busy usage (say, at a sports event in a major city), TextNow customers could experience slower speeds. Visible is owned directly by Verizon, so it can provide network priority on its Visible+ and Visible+ Pro plans to avoid slowdowns (albeit at the cost of a higher monthly bill).
Verizon did win (jointly with T-Mobile) the Reliability Experience Award from OpenSignal’s latest 2025 update, although it is also known to lag behind the other two major carriers when it comes to 5G coverage. To see how the coverage overall will hold up in your area, check out Visible’s coverage map.
TextNow operates on a leading 5G network, which has similar (or slightly broader) 4G LTE and 5G coverage. To see how the coverage will hold up in your area, check out TextNow’s coverage map.
In terms of mobile data speeds, Visible’s broadband facts sheets for the base plan show similar download speeds (11-143 Mbps, depending on 4G LTE or 5G coverage) compared to TextNow’s (5-75 Mbps) and similar upload speeds (1-31 Mbps, depending on 4G LTE or 5G coverage) compared to TextNow’s (1-15 Mbps). On their Visible+ or Visible+ Pro plans, however, Visible does boast of faster speeds.
Realistically, both carriers’ speeds are sufficient for most data activities, including video streaming and video calling. If you’re planning on using your phone heavily for online gaming (multiplayer, specifically), then you may want to opt for Visible’s plans over TextNow’s.
Neither Visible nor TextNow have any physical locations, so there is no in-person support available. Instead, Visible offers live chat support 24/7, or you can try to find an answer on their website’s help page. Reviews from real customers on the efficiency of this support are hit-and-miss. Visible has a 4.1/5 rating on Trustpilot, with most complaints centering around poor network coverage/performance, and difficulty with contacting customer support or getting a resolution in a timely manner.
TextNow also offers live chat support, with an AI-help bot that’s available 24/7, and live support from human representatives that is available from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. EST daily, or you can try to find an answer on the website’s help page. TextNow’s Trustpilot score is slightly lower at 3.8/5, with real reviews tend to be positive when it comes to real troubleshooting support, with most complaints centering around a lack of resolution for TextNow accounts that have been disabled, or other similar terms & conditions-related issues.
Both Visible and TextNow have BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) support, where you can activate your own unlocked phone with one of their SIM cards. Note that TextNow does not currently support eSIM, so you will need to order a physical SIM card to activate your service with them.
TextNow does not offer its own lineup of phones for purchase, while Visible does.
Visible offers phones as well as wearables (Apple Watch, Samsung Watch), with trade-in and upgrade programs available. It also offers device financing through third parties like Affirm, and their own promotions, including a free phone when you sign up for their highest-tier annual plan.
You can use a free phone bill calculator to determine whether financing a phone with Visible (or signing up for their annual plan) is, in fact, cheaper in the long run than bringing your own unlocked phone. If it’s not, you can find the best unlocked phone deal and bring it to either carrier for the best economical choice. To bring your own phone to Visible, first check its compatibility on their online phone compatibility checker before purchasing a plan/SIM. To bring your own phone to TextNow, follow the same step and first check its compatibility on their online phone compatibility checker before purchasing a plan/SIM.
Both TextNow and Visible collect the standard personal data related to signing up for phone service: name, phone, email, billing and shipping addresses, logs and device details. They both secure their customer passwords, but as with any service, you should take specific precautions to keep your account and phone safe: create a strong password for your account that is either changed every 6 months or backed up by a 2-factor authenticator, and know how to spot and avoid phishing scams as well as SIM swap scams.
Visible does offer spam and robocall blocking on all their plans, while TextNow doesn’t have active spam blocking, but rather a “report to spam and block” feature for any unknown calls or texts received.
