How to Check Your Privacy Settings for TextNow and more.

Social media has been in the spotlight recently, between Twitter’s erratic behavior and Congress looking into TikTok, it feels like an excellent time to go over how to set privacy and security settings for TextNow and other apps.

Before we do anything else, let’s look at the single most important setting for any social media platform: Privacy settings.

By adjusting your privacy settings, you can control who sees your posts or messages. That in and of itself can go a very long way to protect your privacy.

Every social media app and network has different controls for privacy, but helpfully, they also tend to have pretty good support documentation. We’ve gathered some links to privacy settings for some of the most popular apps:

And since we’re talking about privacy settings, let’s also look at TextNow’s privacy and security settings.

TextNow is a different beast from these other apps, as we’re not a social media app, so you don’t have to worry about posting publicly. Our privacy and security settings are more basic. Plus, your smartphone will also have built-in security and privacy options, usually in the phone’s main settings menu – look for a section called Security and Privacy, or something similar.

For TextNow itself, you can find the security settings in the settings section of the main menu. Tap on settings, and then tap on Security to get to the Security settings page:

Here you’ll find the security settings for TextNow:

Set a passcode: Tap on this to set a passcode for your TextNow app.

It’s very important to note that this passcode is for the TextNow app only. It does not lock your entire phone – just the TextNow app.

Also note that TextNow has no way of knowing what your passcode is, so if you forget it, you’ll be locked out of your TextNow app. In other words – don't forget it!

And finally, to use the last two options, you must set a passcode first. Once you do, you can use Automatically Lock to set a timer to lock TextNow after a certain amount of time after your phone goes to sleep, and Instant Lock to use your phone’s power button to lock TextNow. The passcode settings will keep your TextNow messages and calls safe from any prying eyes.

Use these settings to help keep your private messages, well, private.
